It was proven on Saturday night that although I may tower over some (few) vertically-challenged saps in Malaysia, I was just a midget amongst the giants in Australia. My photographs taken during Camera Obscura’s only live show in Melbourne at Corner Hotel, Richmond were horrendous to the point of self-combusting in air due to utter embarrassment, so here are some of the passable ones =)
Slow Club, a cross between The Fiery Furnaces and Mates of State albeit more rock-ish, opened the sell-out show with panache, energy and enthusiasm. The boy-girl harmonies duo on drums and guitar were impressive, and set the stage for the retro pop veterans from Glasglow.
Though lead singer Tracyanne Campbell greeted the visibly excited crowd with a misplaced ‘hello Sydney!’ which she later sheepishly apologised for, Camera Obscura was still at the top of their game, belting out numbers from old and new records alike. My favourites include the back-to-back performances of ‘Sweetest Thing’ and ‘French Navy’ as well as the crowd-pleasing ‘Llyod, I’m Ready To Be Heart-Broken’.
I went home smiling, more satisfied with the jingling noir pop playing in my ear than my horrific photography skills =p
